Dragon Press Graphics -2003 Commissions :<p> Lighthouses

My Aunt Kathy requested Lighthouses. I thought it was just a personal picture ( I found out much later it was more then that) and readily agreed, though I was unsure as to whether or not it would be at all possible to do.

There were many obstacles I ran across. One of the first and foremost being that there are SO many on Long Ilsand

Secondly, that most of the lighthouses are concentrated in one area, so that the picture would look most unbalanced. Thirdly, I couldn't find any reliable info - heights, locations, pictures even! Until I went here - Kristen Scroopes Page: Lighthouses of Long Island, New York

Bob Scroope was the photographer of a lot of the images there, and gave me permission to use his pictures, but even then some of the problems I had seemed insermountable. But much as I ranted about the picture, I was DETERMINED to do it.

I solved the unbalancing in one fashion. I seperated the ends of the island into two seperate pictures. Hopefully, this is not too much of a problem.

This is what I decided to use for the border for both pictures:

Below is actually the Western End of Long Island (not Eastern - that was a mistake on mypart): Coney Island (Nortons Point), Stepping Stones, Execution Rocks, Sandspoint, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Harbor (Lloyd Harbor - seperate buildings same spot) and Eatons Neck. I wonder if I should add some clouds to fill the emptiness up top...?

This (below) is the start of the Eastern part of Long Islands Lighthouses (yes, I am consistant in my mistakes). This time I started from the far Right (Montauk Point) and drew leftwards. You can see this is unfinished. The two highest towers (right side) still need shading and toning.

As a matter of fact, in between the center unfinished tower and the leftmost 'tower' (also unfinished) you MAY be able to see some light pencil lines of another lighthouse...

Secondly, you'll note that the left hand is rather unformed. there are at least 2-3 lighthouses NOT yet drawn in (thats including the above penciled one) and the ones that ARE on that side are just outlined.

Since I had time, I attempted to merge the two pictures together as one - so that it would be the size she requested. I did not think it was possible to do and make it look good. It did lose alot of detail cause its hard to work that small (I'd have preffered to work bigger and give her a shot down copy off a copier but she wanted the original), but its done and it STILL looks good. So I'm not gonna show her the other two, I'm just gonna find a frame and put it in.

You'll note that this is NOT linked in by the other parts of the site. It will NOT be until Aunt Kat gets this.
