OTAKON 1997

1997 was the very first time I went to Otakon, and sadly, though there were great costumes, my camera broke. Since that means I have few highlights for you for this year, it will be a rather short page.

The highlights of this year were:

1. The very first MYSTERY ANIME THEATER 3000 presented for us by the convention was a misty of the anime: M.D. Geist. If we enjoyed it, they would do this every year..

2. Otakon 1997 took place in Maryland at the Hunt Valley Inn. This changed twice in the succeeding years due to the significant growth in the convention.

3. Ippongi Bang: writer, voice actress, artist, singer and crowd schmoozer extraordinare. She was really cool!

4. This was also the convention where, as I have found to my amazement, the cold girl incident happened. I have found this to be remembered by people all over the east coast. As high up New Hampshire and as far south as Pennsylvania, people remember the incident, although no one knows who the girl is.

I KNOW. Check in the accounts of the Otakon Comic that will soon be up to find out more about this incident.

5. I also met Adam Warren!

The first special appearance on this page is Ben.

This poor boy has recently been going from con to con dressing up as anime characters. While this is not so bad in itself ( I did so the next year as Lina Inverse in fact!) he dresses up as Female Anime characters. The first time for a dare. The second time because Ippongi Bang expressly asked him to continue doing so.

Ben as Sailor Mercury

Ben as someone from Magic Knight Rayearth. I think he's supposed to be Fuu. I have yet to see it so I may be wrong.

The one on the left is the character he is 'mimicking', and the one on the right is him as that character. How successful is he? That’s for you to decide! :)

Okay, my only non-ben anime character for Otakon 97. It’s Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo.

I apologize for the poor quality of some of these pictures. (particularly my mihoshi...bad camera!)
